The project of the Center of the Promotion for Science of Belgrade is the latest stage in the long process of rebuilding of that part of town, called “New Belgrade”, which has always represented the district symbol of progress and modernity not only for the city but also for all the whole country. The project is set in the Block 39, which is strategically located and it’s highly visible due to its proximity to the European Corridor 10, which connects the east with the west of the continent. This location means that the project must necessarily be highly recognizable and iconic, just to mark the important function hosted and to shown to the world the interest and the care for science shown by the Serbian nation. The recognizable image of the project is mainly provided by the towers, which mark clearly (through its towering mass over the skyline of Belgrade) the presence of the Science Centre on the urban landscape, while on the lower levels five long buildings emerges from the ground on one side to rise on the other, like fingers. This emergence represent the root with the past, and the resurrection from the ashes of war. On one side of the site, one of the five “fingers” suddenly bends and overlaps over one other, assuming the shape of a telescope, the very symbol of the exploration of new horizons. The fingers, moreover, allow to maintain a clear division between the main functions hosted in the Centre, and, at the same time, to taking advantage of their inclination, through allowing the surface of the meadow to climb on their roofs, thus creating a wide continuous green surface, open to visitors’ and citizens’ enjoyment.

Il progetto del Centro di promozione per la scienza di Belgrado è l’ultima fase del lungo processo di ricostruzione di quella parte della città, chiamata “Nuova Belgrado”, che ha sempre rappresentato il simbolo del progresso e modernità non solo per la città ma anche per tutto il paese. Il progetto si trova nel blocco 39 che occupa una posizione strategica ed è ben visibile per la sua vicinanza al corridoio europeo 10, che collega l’est con l’ovest del continente. Questa posizione presuppone un progetto che deve necessariamente essere altamente riconoscibile e iconico, contrassegnando l’alloggiamento di funzioni importanti e mostrando al mondo l’interesse e la cura per la scienza dimostrata dalla nazione serba. L’immagine riconoscibile del progetto è data principalmente dalle torri che segnano chiaramente (attraverso i suoi volumi imponenti sullo skyline di Belgrado) la presenza del Centro di Scienza nel paesaggio urbano, mentre nei livelli più bassi cinque lunghi edifici emergono dal terreno da un lato per poi impennarsi su l’altro lato, come fossero delle dita. Questa nascita rappresenta la radice con il passato, e la risurrezione dalle ceneri della guerra. Su un lato del sito, uno delle cinque “dita” piega improvvisamente e si sovrappone ad un altro volume assumendo la forma di un telescopio, il simbolo stesso delle esplorazioni verso nuovi orizzonti. Le dita, inoltre, consentono di mantenere una netta separazione tra le funzioni principali ospitate nel centro ma, al tempo stesso, sfruttando la loro inclinazione, consentendo di salire sul tetto creando un’ ampia superficie verde continua fruibile sia ai visitatori che ai cittadini cittadini.
